What the counter measures

Word count estimates the number of word segments. Character count includes spaces and punctuation, while the no-space count removes whitespace. Sentence, paragraph and line totals help review structure. Reading and speaking times divide the word count by the selected pace.

Word-count example

The text “Hello world. ToolHub works correctly.” contains five words and two sentences. Changing the reading-speed setting affects the time estimate but not the word total.

How Unicode text is counted

Where available, ToolHub uses Intl.Segmenter for word, sentence and grapheme handling. Unicode-aware fallbacks support older browsers. This improves treatment of emoji, accented letters and scripts that do not always separate words with simple spaces.

Reading time and speaking time

Time estimates are planning aids. Reading speed varies with language, topic and audience. A presentation may also include pauses, questions and slide changes, so use a realistic speaking rate rather than treating the result as an exact duration.

Important limitations

  • Sentence boundaries: abbreviations and unusual punctuation can affect the estimate.
  • Languages: browser segmentation quality can differ by script and browser version.
  • Frequency: common-word exclusion is designed around English.
  • Files: local TXT files are limited to 5 MB.
