How to use the auto loan calculator

  1. 1

Enter the vehicle price and cash down payment.

  2. 2

Add trade-in value and any outstanding balance to find net trade equity.

  3. 3

Choose the applicable tax treatment and enter registration, documentation or other financed fees.

  4. 4

Add the annual interest rate, term and an optional extra monthly payment.

  5. 5

Review amount financed, regular payment, total interest and estimated payoff schedule.

How the amount financed is built

The vehicle price is the starting point. Cash down and positive trade-in equity reduce the amount that must be financed. Taxes and fees can increase it. If the trade-in has a loan, only its value minus the outstanding balance is positive equity; a larger payoff than value creates negative equity.

Car-payment example

A vehicle costs $30,000. A $5,000 down payment leaves $25,000 before taxes and fees. If a trade-in is worth $6,000 but has a $2,000 payoff, its net equity is $4,000, reducing the pre-tax financed amount to $21,000.

Payment versus total vehicle cost

A longer term often lowers the regular payment, but it can keep the balance outstanding for longer and increase total interest. Compare the amount financed and total repayment, not only the monthly number. Also consider insurance, fuel, maintenance and depreciation outside the loan.

Using extra payments

In this calculator, an extra amount reduces principal and can move the estimated payoff date forward. Actual lenders may apply payments differently or have early-settlement rules, so confirm how additional money will be handled.

Important tax and dealer limitations

  • Trade-in tax credit: treatment varies by jurisdiction and transaction type.
  • Fees: registration, documentation, insurance and dealer products may not all be taxable or financeable.
  • Rate: approval and pricing depend on the lender and borrower.
  • Currency: The form uses its built-in currency symbol and does not convert exchange rates.

This is not a current HBL, UBL, Bank Alfalah or dealer financing quote. Use the exact rate, term, tax basis and fees from the proposed contract.

Down payment and trade-in equity

Cash down and positive trade equity both reduce borrowing in the model, but they are different transactions. A trade-in with negative equity can increase the new financed balance. Check the dealer worksheet so the old payoff, trade allowance and cash payment are not combined or counted twice.

Auto Loan Calculator FAQ

How is a car-loan payment calculated?

The calculator builds the financed balance, then applies a fixed-rate amortization formula using the selected interest rate and term.

Does a trade-in reduce the loan?

Positive trade equity normally reduces the modeled amount financed. Outstanding finance is subtracted from the trade-in value first.

Are sales tax and dealer fees included?

They are included only when you enter them and select the applicable treatment. Real tax and fee rules vary by location.

What happens if I choose a longer term?

The payment often falls, but the loan may accrue interest for longer. Compare both monthly payment and total interest.

Can I model extra car payments?

Yes. Add an extra payment to estimate a faster payoff and lower future interest, subject to the real lender’s rules.

Does this calculator provide financing?

No. It does not contact dealers or lenders, check credit, quote a rate or make an approval decision.
