How to convert units

  1. 1

Choose the measurement category, such as length, temperature or storage.

  2. 2

    Enter the value to convert.

  3. 3

Select the source unit and target unit.

  4. 4

Choose enough decimal precision for the task.

  5. 5

Review and copy the converted value.

How unit conversion works

Most categories convert the source value to a documented base unit and then convert that base value to the target unit. This keeps reciprocal pairs consistent. Temperature is different because Celsius and Fahrenheit require offsets as well as multipliers.

Unit-conversion examples

Length: 1 kilometre is approximately 0.621371 miles. Temperature: 20°C equals 68°F using °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32.

Decimal and binary storage units

KB, MB, GB and TB use decimal powers based on 1,000. KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB use binary powers based on 1,024. They are not interchangeable, so select the notation shown by the file system, storage device or technical specification.

Volume and fuel economy

US and metric volume units can share similar names while representing different amounts. Fuel economy also uses reciprocal relationships: miles per gallon and litres per 100 kilometres do not convert with one simple multiplier.

Important limitations

  • Rounding: displayed decimals can hide smaller differences.
  • Definitions: horsepower means mechanical horsepower in this tool.
  • Electricity: converting watts to amperes requires voltage and circuit assumptions, so it is not a direct same-category unit conversion here.
  • Precision: increase decimal places for technical work and verify critical engineering calculations.

Unit Converter FAQ

How many categories does the unit converter support?

It covers length, mass, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, storage, pressure, energy, power, angle, fuel economy, force and frequency.

Why is temperature not a simple multiplier?

Celsius and Fahrenheit scales use different zero points, so their formulas require an offset.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB is decimal and based on 1,000, while MiB is binary and based on 1,024.

Can I convert watts directly to amperes?

Not without voltage and circuit assumptions. They measure different electrical quantities.

Why does my result differ slightly?

Tools may display different decimal precision or use a different unit definition. Compare full values before rounding.

Are values uploaded?

No. Unit calculations happen locally in your browser.
