How to use the savings calculator

  1. 1

Choose Growth mode to project a balance or Goal mode to solve for a regular contribution.

  2. 2

Enter the starting balance, savings period and annual rate.

  3. 3

Select APY or a nominal rate and its compounding frequency.

  4. 4

Add weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly or annual deposits and choose beginning or end timing.

  5. 5

Review the ending balance, contributions, interest, inflation-adjusted value and yearly table.

How savings growth is calculated

The calculator converts the entered rate into an effective annual yield. APY is already an effective yearly rate. A nominal rate is converted using daily, monthly, quarterly or annual compounding. Each deposit grows for the time remaining after it is made, which is why contribution timing matters.

Savings-with-interest example

With a $10,000 starting balance, $500 deposited at the end of each month, a 5% APY and a ten-year period, the estimated balance is about $93,470.53. That includes $60,000 of new deposits and about $23,470.53 of interest. At 3% inflation, the displayed purchasing-power estimate is about $69,550.85.

APY, compound interest and deposit timing

A savings calculator with compound interest should distinguish APY from a nominal annual rate. Entering an APY and also applying an extra compounding assumption would overstate growth. Deposits made at the beginning of each period receive slightly more time to earn interest than deposits made at the end.

Saving toward a target

Goal mode estimates the regular contribution required after accounting for current savings, time, rate and deposit frequency. It is useful for testing a house deposit, education fund or other target. The result is mathematical: actual account rates, taxes, charges and missed deposits may change the outcome.

Important limitations

  • Constant return: the entered rate is assumed to continue for the full period.
  • No withdrawals: irregular withdrawals and account fees are not modeled.
  • Inflation: purchasing power uses one constant annual rate.
  • Taxes: tax on interest is not included.
  • Returns: investment performance is not guaranteed.

Savings Calculator FAQ

How does the savings calculator include compound interest?

It converts the selected rate to an effective annual yield and grows each balance or deposit for the time it remains invested.

What is the difference between APY and a nominal rate?

APY already includes compounding; a nominal rate must be combined with a compounding frequency.

Can it calculate how much I need to save each month?

Yes. Goal mode estimates a recurring contribution for the selected target and period.

Does beginning-of-month deposit timing matter?

Yes. Earlier deposits have more time to earn interest than end-of-period deposits.

Does the calculator support withdrawals?

No. It models deposits, not irregular withdrawals.

Are the results guaranteed?

No. They are estimates based on constant assumptions and are not financial advice.
