How this calculator works
Target = essential monthly expenses × selected months. The 3/6/9/12-month comparison is informational, not a universal recommendation. Current savings are subtracted to find a gap or surplus. APY is converted to an equivalent monthly rate and contributions are added at each month end. Target-date estimates begin today, clamping month-end dates. The target is fixed in nominal money; changing expenses, rates, taxes, and fees are not modeled. Simulation stops at 1,200 months. Zero expenses means a zero target; percentage funded is not applicable.
Results are estimates for planning purposes only and do not constitute financial, investment, tax, lending, or legal advice.

The result depends on the expenses, target period and savings assumptions entered. It is not a universal recommendation or financial advice.

How the emergency fund target is calculated
The target equals total essential monthly expenses multiplied by the selected coverage months. The calculator compares current emergency savings with that target. When a monthly contribution is entered, it models end-of-month deposits and optional savings growth to estimate the number of months and an approximate target date.
Emergency fund example
If essential expenses are $3,000 per month and the selected target is six months, the goal is $18,000. With $5,000 already saved, the remaining gap is $13,000 and the fund is 27.78% complete. Saving $500 per month at 4% APY reaches the modeled goal in about 25 months.
What counts as an essential expense?
Focus on costs that would continue during a loss of income or urgent disruption: basic housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, necessary transport, minimum debt payments, healthcare, childcare and essential support obligations. Entertainment and optional purchases may be reduced, but your realistic list depends on the household.
How many months should you choose?
There is no single target for everyone. A shorter reserve may be a starting goal, while variable income, one-income households, dependants, health needs or uncertain employment may justify more coverage. The tool shows common 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-month comparisons, but these are reference scenarios, not personalized recommendations.
Important limitations
- Constant expenses: emergencies may raise some costs or allow others to fall.
- Constant APY: the entered savings rate is assumed to continue.
- No withdrawals: the timeline assumes no money is taken from the fund while saving.
- Tax and inflation: tax on interest and changing future expenses are not modeled.
- Access matters: consider liquidity, account restrictions and deposit protection separately.
