How to convert a number base
- 1
Enter the signed integer to convert.
- 2
Select its source base.
- 3
Choose the target base from 2 through 36.
- 4
Run conversion and review validation messages.
- 5
Copy the complete output, including a minus sign when present.
Binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal
Binary uses digits 0 and 1. Octal uses 0 through 7. Decimal uses 0 through 9. Hexadecimal adds A through F for values 10 through 15. Bases above 16 continue with letters up to Z, allowing base 36.
Number-base example
Decimal 255 converts to binary 11111111, octal 377 and hexadecimal FF. Converting FF from base 16 back to base 10 returns 255.
Why BigInt matters
JavaScript Number values cannot represent every large integer exactly. This tool uses BigInt for parsing and conversion, avoiding floating-point rounding for supported signed integers. Very large inputs remain exact but can create long output strings.
Input validation
Every digit must exist in the selected source base. The digit 2 is invalid in binary, and the letter G is invalid in hexadecimal. Letters are treated case-insensitively for input and displayed in the tool’s output style.
Important limitations
- Integers only: fractions and decimal points are not supported.
- No scientific notation: enter the full integer value.
- Signed values: negative values use a leading minus sign, not a fixed-width two’s-complement representation.
- Digital electronics: this converter changes notation; it does not explain bit width, overflow or signed storage formats.

Binary & Number Base Converter FAQ
How do I convert binary to decimal?
Enter the binary digits, select base 2 as the source and base 10 as the target.
Can I convert decimal to hexadecimal?
Yes. Select base 10 as the source and base 16 as the target.
Which bases are supported?
Any base from 2 through 36, including binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal.
Can it convert very large integers?
Yes. BigInt avoids ordinary JavaScript Number rounding, though very large results can be long.
Are fractions supported?
No. The tool intentionally supports exact signed integers only.
Why is a digit invalid?
A digit must be smaller than the source base; for example, 2 cannot appear in a base-2 value.
