How this calculator works

Net worth = assets − liabilities. Debt-to-asset ratio = liabilities ÷ assets; it is unavailable when assets are zero. Liquid assets include cash, checking, savings, and emergency funds. Investments and retirement accounts are grouped separately. Mortgage and auto loans are classified as secured; other listed debt defaults to unsecured for this planning snapshot. Custom liabilities let you explicitly classify collateral. Enter each balance once; avoid double-counting emergency funds included in savings. Values are estimates, with no account syncing or saved history.

Results are estimates for planning purposes only and do not constitute financial, investment, tax, lending, or legal advice.

How net worth is calculated

The formula is simple: net worth = total assets − total liabilities. Assets are things with measurable financial value that you own. Liabilities are balances you owe. A positive result means entered assets exceed entered debts; a negative result means debts exceed assets.

The debt-to-asset ratio divides total liabilities by total assets. It can help track leverage over time, but it does not measure monthly affordability, credit quality or whether an asset can be sold quickly.

Net worth example

Suppose cash and investments total $90,000, a home is valued at $350,000 and a vehicle at $20,000. Total assets are $460,000. With a $280,000 mortgage, $12,000 vehicle loan and $8,000 in other debt, total liabilities are $300,000. Estimated net worth is $160,000, and liabilities equal about 65.2% of assets.

Choosing useful asset values

Use a reasonable current value rather than an original purchase price. For property, vehicles, collectibles and business interests, valuation can be uncertain and selling costs may reduce what you actually receive. Avoid counting future salary or expected inheritances as current assets. Use one date and one currency across the whole snapshot.

What net worth does not show

Net worth is a balance-sheet view, not a full measure of financial health. A household can have high net worth but limited cash available for monthly bills. Another may have a lower result while earning stable income and building savings. Review cash flow, emergency reserves, insurance and long-term goals separately.

Important limitations

  • Manual values: the calculator does not verify accounts, debts or market prices.
  • Liquidity: a property or retirement account is not the same as available cash.
  • Taxes and costs: possible tax, penalties and selling expenses are not deducted automatically.
  • Joint ownership: include only the share that belongs in the household or personal view you are calculating.
  • Snapshot only: the result changes whenever asset prices, savings or debt balances change.
