How to use the paycheck calculator

  1. 1

Choose hourly pay or annual salary so the calculator uses the right gross-pay method.

  2. 2

For hourly work, enter regular hours, hourly rate and any overtime hours or multiplier.

  3. 3

Select the pay frequency shown on your offer, timesheet or pay stub.

  4. 4

Add the tax percentages, benefits and other deductions that apply to your own scenario.

  5. 5

Review gross pay, total deductions, estimated take-home pay and the annual comparison.

Gross pay, deductions and net pay

Gross pay is earnings before deductions. For hourly workers, regular gross pay is the hourly rate multiplied by regular hours. Overtime is calculated separately using the overtime rate or multiplier you enter. For salaried workers, annual salary is divided across the selected number of pay periods.

Net pay, often called take-home pay, is the amount left after entered taxes, insurance, retirement contributions and other deductions. A paycheck calculator online can organize those inputs, but the result is only as accurate as the rates you provide.

Paycheck calculation example

An employee earns $25 per hour, works 40 regular hours and completes 5 overtime hours at 1.5×. Regular pay is $1,000 and overtime pay is $187.50, so weekly gross pay is $1,187.50. If entered deductions total $260, estimated take-home pay is $927.50.

How pay frequency changes the view

Weekly payroll normally creates 52 pay periods a year, while biweekly payroll normally creates 26. Semimonthly pay usually means 24 periods, and monthly pay means 12. Biweekly and semimonthly are not the same: the annual total may be similar, but individual paycheck amounts and payment dates differ.

Why an actual pay stub may be different

  • Jurisdiction: tax brackets, allowances and payroll rules vary by country, state and city.
  • Benefits: some deductions are pre-tax while others are taken after tax.
  • Payroll timing: bonuses, commissions, unpaid time and cut-off dates can change one pay period.
  • Rounding: employers and payroll systems may round each line differently.

This is not a state-specific paycheck calculator and does not calculate legal withholding for Texas, California, Florida or another location automatically. Enter known deduction rates and compare the estimate with an official pay stub.

Paycheck Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate take-home pay?

Start with gross pay, then subtract the taxes, benefits and other deductions that apply to the pay period. This tool performs that arithmetic from the values you enter.

Can I calculate an hourly paycheck with overtime?

Yes. Enter regular hours, hourly rate, overtime hours and the applicable overtime multiplier to estimate gross earnings before deductions.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly usually means every two weeks, or 26 periods in a normal year. Semimonthly usually means twice per month, or 24 periods.

Does this calculator use current tax brackets?

No. It does not retrieve live tax tables. Enter the deduction rates or amounts you want to model and verify withholding with an official payroll source.

Can it calculate official US payroll tax?

No. The form provides US-style federal, state and local deduction fields, but you must enter the percentages. It does not fetch current tax tables.

Is paycheck information uploaded?

No. The values stay in browser memory and are not submitted to Shopshubb by this tool.
