AI Background Remover

Remove a photo background with the bundled U²-Net segmentation model. Refine the mask, keep transparency or add a solid or replacement background, then download the result as PNG.

Your image is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded or stored by this tool.

Your image stays in the browser

Processing uses bundled browser-side model files. The selected image and output are not uploaded by ToolHub or added to the WordPress Media Library.

How to remove an image background

  1. 1

Select a JPEG, PNG or browser-decodable WebP image.

  2. 2

Start background removal and allow the local AI model to identify the main subject.

  3. 3

Inspect difficult edges such as hair, fur, glass, shadows or small gaps.

  4. 4

Adjust the available mask controls and choose transparent, solid or replacement background output.

  5. 5

Download the PNG and inspect it at full size before publishing or printing.

How the local AI background remover works

When processing begins, ToolHub lazily loads its bundled ONNX Runtime Web files and compact U²-Net model. Segmentation runs in a Web Worker with WebAssembly, which separates likely foreground pixels from the background. Mask refinement and PNG creation remain in browser memory.

The first use may take longer because the browser must load the model. Keeping the work local avoids a ToolHub file upload, but performance still depends on the device, available memory, image size and browser support.

Background-removal example

Use a product photo taken against a plain wall. Run the model, zoom in around the product edges and refine any soft areas. Choose transparency for marketplace design work, or select a solid background for a consistent catalog style.

How to get a cleaner result

  • Use clear separation: a subject that differs in color or brightness from the background is easier to detect.
  • Avoid tiny inputs: very low-resolution files do not contain enough edge detail.
  • Check fine areas: hair, fur, lace, spokes and leaves often need closer review.
  • Review transparency: place the PNG over both light and dark backgrounds to find halos.

Why the output is PNG

PNG supports transparent pixels, while standard JPEG does not. The output may be larger than a compressed JPEG, especially for detailed or high-resolution images. Use the Image Compressor after background removal if you need a smaller web file and transparency is not required.

Compatibility and limitations

AI segmentation is best effort. It can miss translucent objects, complex scenes, similar foreground and background colors, motion blur or overlapping subjects. This tool removes image backgrounds only; it does not process video. A current browser with Web Workers, WebAssembly, Canvas and Blob support is required.

AI Background Remover FAQ

Is this AI background remover free?

Yes. You can process supported images and download the result without signing up.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image, mask and output remain in browser memory and are not uploaded by ToolHub.

Can I download a transparent background?

Yes. Choose transparent output and download PNG, a format that supports alpha transparency.

Why are hair or fur edges imperfect?

Fine, translucent and low-contrast areas are difficult for segmentation models. Use the mask controls and inspect the full-size output.

Does the tool remove video backgrounds?

No. It works with supported still-image formats, not video.

Why is the first run slower?

The browser must load the bundled model and runtime files before local AI processing can begin.
