Hash & Checksum Generator

Generate SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA-1 or MD5 checksums for text and local files. Compare a result with an expected value to check whether the bytes match.

Hash & Checksum Generator

Calculate a checksum for UTF-8 text or a local file, then optionally compare it with an expected hash.

Hash input

A match confirms equality with the supplied checksum; it does not prove authenticity.

Text and files are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded or stored by this tool.

Files remain local

Text and file bytes are hashed in your browser. ToolHub does not upload the selected file or checksum input.

How to generate a checksum

  1. 1

Choose text input or select a local file.

  2. 2

    Select SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA-1 or MD5.

  3. 3

Generate the digest and copy the complete hexadecimal result.

  4. 4

Paste an expected checksum when a trusted publisher provides one.

  5. 5

Confirm an exact match, including every character.

What a checksum tells you

A cryptographic hash turns input bytes into a fixed-length digest. The same bytes and algorithm produce the same checksum. A one-byte change should produce a different result, making hashes useful for detecting accidental or unauthorized changes.

File-checksum example

Download a software package and obtain the vendor’s published SHA-256 value from an authenticated source. Hash the local file, paste the expected value and confirm an exact match.

SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-1 and MD5

SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 use the browser Web Crypto API. A small bundled implementation handles MD5 locally. MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically weak and should not be chosen for new signatures, password storage or security designs.

A matching hash does not prove trust

A match proves that two byte sequences are equal. It does not prove that the publisher, website or file is trustworthy. If an attacker changes both a file and an unprotected checksum shown beside it, the values can still match.

Important limitations

  • Text bytes: encoding, capitalization and line-ending changes produce different hashes.
  • Algorithm: compare values created with the same algorithm.
  • Passwords: general checksums are not password-hashing schemes.
  • Source: obtain expected values through a trustworthy channel.

Hash & Checksum Generator FAQ

Which checksum algorithms are available?

SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA-1 and MD5 are supported.

What does a matching checksum prove?

It shows that the compared bytes are identical under the selected algorithm, not that the source is trustworthy.

Should I use MD5 or SHA-1 for security?

No. They are legacy algorithms and are unsuitable for new signatures, password storage or security designs.

Why did a text checksum change?

A space, line ending, capitalization or encoding difference changes the input bytes and therefore the hash.

Can I hash a local file?

Yes. Select file mode and compare the result with a trusted expected value if available.

Is the file uploaded?

No. File hashing occurs locally in your browser.
