Sales tax and VAT formulas
For an exclusive price, tax = net price × rate and gross price equals net plus tax. To remove tax from an inclusive price, net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). The included tax is gross minus net. Dividing the gross amount by the tax rate alone gives the wrong reverse-tax result.
Add and remove tax example
At a 15% rate, a net price of $100 produces $15 tax and a $115 gross price. Reversing the same $115 inclusive amount returns $100 net and $15 included tax.
Is sales tax the same as VAT?
Both can increase the customer price, but their legal operation and reporting can differ. VAT is commonly collected through stages of a supply chain with input-credit rules. Retail sales tax is often charged at the final sale. GST may operate similarly to VAT in some countries. This calculator performs the same percentage arithmetic without deciding legal classification.
Inclusive versus exclusive prices
An exclusive price does not yet contain tax. An inclusive price already contains it. Always confirm which basis appears on an invoice, receipt, quotation or product listing. Rounding per line item can also produce a slightly different invoice total from calculating tax once on the full order.
Important limitations
- Jurisdiction: rates, exemptions and place-of-supply rules are not supplied.
- Multiple taxes: layered, compound or local taxes require separate review.
- Rounding: official invoice rules may round each line differently.
- Compliance: results are not tax, accounting or legal advice.
